History
The Dépôt des archives d'outre-mer (DAOM - overseas territories archives repository) was created in 1966 by André Chamson, director general of the Archives de France, in order to deal with archival issues related to decolonization. Located from its very beginnings in Aix-en-Provence (department of Bouches-du-Rhône) and renamed “Centre des archives d’outre-mer” (CAOM – overseas territories archives center), it was opened to the public since January 2nd 1987. In 2007, it became a “service à compétence nationale” (government agency with national authority) and took the name of the “Archives nationales d’outre-mer” (ANOM – overseas territories national archives). According to the government decision establishing the ANOM as a government agency with national authority (arrêté du 24 décembre 2006 érigeant le service Archives nationales d'outre-mer en service à compétence nationale), its missions are:
- to ensure accessioning, to appraise, to arrange, to identify, to preserve, to restore, to give access and to promote the public archives related to the French colonial presence overseas;
- to ensure accessioning or to purchase, to appraise, to arrange, to identify, to preserve, to restore, to give access and to promote the private archives related to the French colonial presence overseas.

The ANOM hold the archives from the secretariats of state and the ministries responsible for the French colonies from the 17th Century to the 20th Century, as well as the archives from the former colonies repatriated during the decolonization, apart from the management files which have remained in situ. Among the files transferred to France were the fonds of the governors, consular posts, prefectures and police services for example. Thus, the ANOM hold the archives repatriated from Indochina (transferred between 1951 and 1954), India (1954), Madagascar and French Equatorial Africa (1960), Algeria (1962), Comoros (1974), the Afars et the Issas (1977), and New Hebrides (1980).
The ANOM also hold the private fonds (individuals, families or firms) related to the overseas territories. It includes specialized book, map and image libraries as well.
