Workers needed for railroad construction works beyond Al Madina (technical committee, workers from Jerusalem, details on salaries), 29 December 1906 (Gregorian calendar) - 16 Kânûn Awwal 1322 (Ottoman fiscal calendar (Rumi)

The telegram dated on the 13th of Kânûn awal (1)322 (illegible) from the second secretary of the imperial (illegible) states that it is necessary to start building the upper Hijâz railway from Medina onwards. In order to begin the construction based on technical inspections, a technical committee was founded and compensated (?). The speed of operations depends on the number of workers and in Medina there are very few workers. Therefore the imperial government has asked for the recruitment of 100 persons from the district of Jerusalem with each person being paid 8 piasters and 60 para daily for each square meter. The transportation costs of those persons would be paid by the financial administration of the railway. Whoever is registered and wants to work until the season of pilgrimage, visit the pure land of Medina and accomplish his pilgrimage, can also have his transportation paid for by the mentioned administration. If anyone gets sick during the work, he will be treated for free, and for those who pass away their families will receive a salary. So whoever wants to go there should contact the municipal department within five days from the date below. And in order for this to be known, these directions were published on the 16th of Kânûn Awwal (1)322 (29th of December 1906).

Work to divert sewage water in Silwan to start, 27 October 1904 (Gregorian calendar) - 14 Tishrîn Awwal 1320 (Ottoman fiscal calendar (Rumi)

We have read the decision of the district administrative council dated on the 5th of Tishrîn Awwal (1)320 and bearing the number 915 which was given as a response to the decision of our elders (majlis ajzana) dated on the 29th of Aylûl (1)320 and which concerns the diversion of sewage water from the mosque in the village of Silwân. It has been found urgent to pursue (the digging of) holes in order to find the remains of the old sewage system which was recently discovered in the village of Silwân. Having this in mind, an agreement was found with Jum‘a Mustafa Ahmad Abû Adyâb from the village (illegible), that he will dig the holes for the mentioned sewage, from the point where the previous digging had stopped until (the house of) Bakr Ayûb and that he will isolate what he will find from the mentioned (old) sewage system from dirt. (The cost will be calculated) on the basis of seven piasters darîj al band for each meter of length, whatever the depth might be. Since this has been approved by the treasury, it has been decided to begin the work and pay the registered (contractor) what is needed (rest illegible). He will be paid after the second inspection. Accordingly, this (decision) was taken on the 14th of Tishrîn Awwal (1)320 (27th of October 1904).

They are now preparing the necessary materials and if these people are sent away, the said work would be abandoned; hence, the matter of exempting the said village folk from their obligations is relegated to the mutasarrifate. Widow of deceased municipal guard needs help, 8 February 1897 (Gregorian calendar) - 27 Kânûn Thânî 1312 (Ottoman fiscal calendar (Rumi)

Since Dâwûd al-Shihâbî, one of the council’s inspectors, has died and has left behind a wife and three minor children with no one to provide for them, it is necessary to allocate them some money from the municipality’s treasury. However, the municipality’s treasury is going through a difficult period and has no extra funds for people in their situation, so it was decided to delay the appointment of someone to take his place and manage the affairs of the department by one or two people from the guards’ inspectors and the gas station. Five majîdî riyals have been allocated to the children of Dâwûd, and the rest will be left to the treasury. This decision was taken on the 27th of Kânûn Thânî (1)312 (8th of February 1897).

Widening of street near Bab al’Amud, 14 May 1899 (Gregorian calendar) - 3 Mayîs 1315 (Ottoman fiscal calendar (Rumi)

Since the width of the road built by the respectable Muhyî Eddîn Effendi al-Khâlidî through his land located outside of Damascus Gate is no more than four adhru’; the land bought by Murâd Ibrâhîm Zawânah Al-Rûmî from the aforementioned Effendi is adjacent to the [above] mentioned road; and construction works have been raised in the land [near] the road. [For all these reasons], it has been decided on the council level to widen the mentioned road up to six adhru’. Thus, one cubit has to be taken away from the land of the mentioned [above] ‘Ibrâhîm Zawânah, in addition to another cubit from the land adjacent to it, so that the mentioned road will be six adhru’ wide. Therefore, this decision was taken on the 3rd of Mâyis (1)315 (14th of May 1899).
