Archive of Friar Paschal Robinson ofm (1870-1948), mission as Apostolic Visitator in Palestine

Before being appointed Titular of the new Apostolic Nonciature in Ireland (1929-1948), Fr Paschal Robinson ofm (1870-1948) had an intense diplomatic activity on behalf of the Holy See, in particular of the Secretariat of State and the Congregations for the Oriental Church and Propaganda Fide.
After his death, Mgr Domenico Tardini, at that time secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, ordered to preserve the documents of his missions as Apostolic Visitator in Palestine and Apostolic Delegate in Malta. Then the documents were deposited in the ASV.
The six folders mainly concerns the Apostolic visits to Palestine entrusted to Fr Robinson by the Congregation for the Oriental Church (1925-1928) and the Congregation for Propaganda Fide (1920-1921; 1927-1928).

This archival fonds contains documents from 1839 to 1935, although some of them date before this period. Most part of the archives of pontifical representations started to arrive to Vatican since the mid Seventies of the 20th century.
During the cataloguing, the fonds was divided into “Archivio Antico”; “Archivio mons. Cassulo” e “Archivio mons. Valeri-Mazzoli-Bartoloni-Dini”. The last one is composed by 101 dossiers.

Mgr Testa took over the archive of the Apostolic Delegation after his entry to Jerusalem, on 18 June, 1948. The archive contains 38 folders concerning the administrations of the Apostolic Delegates Gustavo Testa, Arthur Hughes, Silvio Oddi and Giuseppe Sensi. The documentation covers the period 1935-1962. The documentation concerning the government of Mgr Valerio Valeri has been lost in 1948 when the palace of the Apostolic Delegation was destroyed. A well-structured filing plan is available for the government of Testa, Oddi and Sensi. The archive is accessible until 1939.

The RG 84 series (US-NARA) includes the rapatriated records from US embassies and consulates around the world. It is mainly constitutes of correspondence.
For the period between 1856 and 1935, we can find 261 volumes. It is both sent correspondence (copies or minutes) and received correspondence (the received letters are stuck together to form registers).
Most of these registers date back to the 1912-1935 period (160 volumes).
The selected items come from Volume 22 (Years 1857 to 1870), Volume 47A (Years 1871 to 1886), Volume 47B (Years 1886 to 1896), Volume 47C (Years 1897 to 1908) and Volume 47D (Years 1904 to 1909).

This collection includes correspondence received from the US Consulate General in Jerusalem. The 9 selected and described volumes (registers) includes dispatches sent from Jerusalem to Washington DC between 1856 and 1906. A microfilm copy of these registers have been made in 1969 and constitutes the unit number M.453 (5 rolls).
After 1906, the letters received by Washington from US embassies and consulates have been organized by themes (trade, war, customs) and no longer by origin.

The Matson Photograph (G. Eric and Edith) Collection is a rich source of historical images of the Middle East. The majority of the images depict Palestine (present day Israel and the West Bank) from 1898 to 1946. Most of the collection consists of over 22,000 glass and film photographic negatives and transparencies created by the American Colony Photo Department and its successor firm, the Matson Photo Service. Over 1,000 photographic prints and eleven albums are also part of this collection.

Selection of appointment registers from the records of the awqāf of the Maghariba neighborhood

This body of document is composed of registers from the records of the awqāf of the Maghariba neighborhood. They mainly deal with appointments, promotions, and dismissals of waqf employees.
The appointment registers (esās/şaẖsiyāt) are an other primary sources to provide us with adequate information on the actual nature of the social and economic activities of a waqf, or on the changes in these activities over time.

The registers are bound in leather, cloth, or marbled paper, and are written in the inaccessible ṣiyaḳat writing style [...]. Ṣiyaḳat refers to letters and numbers expressed in the “stairs” style of writing, used in Ottoman accounting documents to establish a powerful regime of surveillance, inspection, and communication. Each register starts with an index page. In the index, the records are organized under the headings of the district names and the records were entered on this basis. Records are usually written vertically. The contents provide detailed information about the administrative structure of the area, the names of the district, names of the awqāf and their founders, types of work, previous and current names of office holders, reasons for new postings, fees, names of administrators who can request different postings, and the dates of documents recorded in a specific order and sequence.

While the records in the ʿatīḳ registers are arranged according to their administrative units, the cedīd structure is identical to the waqf registers. These registers began to be kept after 1300/1882, with a specific reference to the ʿatīḳ series. These are also hardcover volumes bound in leather, cloth, or marbled
paper, written in rikʿa, rikʿa crumble, dīvanī or tāʿlīk style. The records are usually written horizontally. Four series of registers make up this collection. The cedīd registers are also organized differently than the ʿatīḳ registers and are written in a systematic way in a chart called the “Register of Professions” (Defter Esās Cihāt). All new appointments and other additions are written in the events section of the chart. Thus, this chart acts as a summary of the activities of the waqfiyya.
The records of the Maghariba neighborhood are located in number 515 of the ʿatīḳ registers (Kudüs ʿatīḳ) and in number 160 of the cedīd (Kudüs cedīd) registers. There is also an index register numbered 163 called the Index of Benghazi and Jerusalem, which includes the index of the ʿatīḳ and cedīd registers.

The Imperial Rescript means the order of the sultan. Formerly, the term “the Firmans” was used for the orders of the sultan. From 1832 on, the writing that was offered in response to the “letters” presented to the clerk of the sultan and that meant the approval of the sultan was called ‘irade’. The Imperial Rescripts in file procedure were grouped according to the issues and subjects in them, not according to the ministries and offices to which they belonged.
