Sir Horatio Herbert Kitchener's Western Survey of Jerusalem

The Survey party under Conder returned to England after the attack at Safed in July 1875. There remained only the completion of the survey of Galilee. Conder stayed in England to prepare for publication while Kitchener took the Survey Party back to Palestine in January 1877 completing in September 1877.

The Royal Decree of November 17, 1871 establishes the Italian Consulate in Palestine.

The papers - repatriated partially organized in categories (called ‘Posizioni’ in this archive) - attest:

  • Dealing of political affairs (conflicts between the religious communities; relations with clergy and the other religious communities; relations with the Ethiopian community)
  • Relations with the administron and contacts with other Consulates
  • Assistance provided to Italians (protection of nationals and legal aid)
  • Staff and employee administration (internal organization and regulations)
