Correspondence Office

The Correspondence Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Hariciye Mektubi Kalemi) is the unit that conducts the correspondences of the ministry with the other ministries and offices in İstanbul and the institutions and organizations in the country. To this end, the documents in this catalogue are related to the ban on the jerque and evolvement of the obscene publications; ban on the selling of black captives; announcement of the hatt-ı hümayuns, published on the occasion of the sultans’ enthronement, to the public; and thanks for the congratulations on the bairams and Christmas. Also, they are about the other states’ attitudes and policies to the Ottoman State, elimination of the disagreements over the frontier; reports of enquiry and inspection in different parts of the state; appointment of the ambassador, şehbender and consul and the supply of their personal rights, and so on.

The Imperial Council of Legal Affairs (Meclis-i Vala-yı Ahkam-ı Adliye ) was founded as the assembly of reforms in 1838 after the Supreme Council and the Consultation Assembly (Meclis-i Meşveret) lost their functions and charged with conducting the Tanzimat’s reforms and innovations. This series includes documents related to the correspondences of the assembly and to the decision made by the assembly. In it, there are a lot of documents regarding any sort of change in the state institutions in the Tanzimat Era and de novo organisation of the state. Moreover, the application of the reforms and the difficulties that were faced could be monitored easily from these documents.
