In the Waqf Inheritance section, the number of documents approaches a million and a half; as well there are 2,500 manuscripts covering various subjects, including religion, philosophy, Arabic language, history and so on. Among them, the Open Jerusalem team selected a body of 41 files (totalizing 668 pages) issued by the Jerusalem Awqâf administration and related to Moghrabi neighborhood in Jerusalem.
Note : the spelling is “Mograbi” from Arabic to English, and “Maghariba” from Ottoman Turkish to English.

Saint Saviour’s Convent, Custody of the Holy Land

This fonds is part of the Archives of Religious Houses (or Archives of convents) held by the Historical Archive of the Custody of the Holy Land.

The Monastery of Saint Saviour is a Catholic Franciscan monastery located on 1 Saint Francis Street, east of the New Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. The site was purchased from the Georgian Orthodox Church in 1560 with permission by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire, and the monastery was constructed in stages. The church building was erected in 1885, with renovation in 1985. The site includes a printing press, an organ workshop, a library and a Catholic school.

Besides from the Franciscan convent, Saint Saviour shelters also the “Parish of Saint Saviour” and a Casa Nova (a Franciscan house for pilgrims).
Convent of Terra Sancta College is a succursal of Saint Saviour’s Latin parish, and a cultural centre of the Custody of the Holy Land.

Le fonds Ruhi al-Khalidi est composé en partie de recueils de vocabulaire (lexiques arabe-anglais organisés en listes), de notes prises dans divers ouvrages, dont ceux d'Ibn Khaldoun, de courriers, d'un inventaire de livres, d'un catalogue des ouvrages de la bibliothèque et d'au moins deux journaux contenant une succession de collages.
Les documents identifiés ont été produits vers la fin du XIXème et le début du XXème siècle.

L'un des volumes présents dans le fonds, intitulé "Catalogues des livres de Rouhi Bey El Khalidi à la Bibliothèque Khalidieh, Jérusalem » (Rwhi_25/14) consigne par écrit une importante collection d'ouvrages imprimés issus de la bibliothèque personnelle de Ruhi Khalidi. Ce catalogue aurait été réalisé après la mort de Ruhi Khalidi ou à la fin de sa vie et témoigne de ses intérêts variés, plusieurs titres s'intéressant à la religion, l'histoire, au voyage et notamment à Bordeaux, où Ruhi Khalidi a été consul, et à la Gironde. Cette collection est conservée à la bibliothèque Khalidi à Jérusalem.

Ruhi Khalidi (RK)

The oldest documents in the Consulate fonds date back to 1843, to the foundation of the Consulate of Palestine during the Kingdom of Sardinia. According to the papers the Consulate closed in 1849 leaving the defence of the citizens to the Consulate of France.

The Royal Decree dated November 17th, 1871 establishes the Italian Consulate in Palestine. The papers cover the history of the Consulate until its closure, in June 10th, 1940. At that date the protection of Italian interests was entrusted to the Spanish Consulate. The activity of Consul Quinto Mazzolini and his Bureau in Rome (Ufficio Stralcio) lasted during 1943.
