Administrative Documents from the Ministry

This series includes documents related to civil administration regulations; selection of municipal councils (councellors?) and administrators; licensing schools and churches building for non-Muslim people; allowing various archaeological excavations on the Ottoman lands and preventing the historical artefacts smuggling.

Classified Correspondence Office

This series includes correspondence from the Confidential Correspondence Office of the Ministry of Interior (Dahiliye Nezareti Şifre Kalemi), which conducted the communication of the units of the Ministry with the other provinces and lieutenant governors and, when necessary, acted as an intermediary agent where the quick and secret communications of the other ministries and state offices were enciphered.

General administration

This subseries includes documents related to the appointment, dismissal and awarding of the state officials; real estate and field businesses; collection and transfer of food; supply of the soldiers’ needs; education and training; waqfs and organisation of villages, towns and districts; enlistment and conscription; and fulfilment of the required procedures in case of earthquake, fire and flood.

General Correspondence Office

After an improvment in local administration in 1909 (1327) the Correspondence Office duties (Dahiliye Nezareti Mektubi Kalemi) have been made over to the General Correspondence Office (Muhaberat-ı Umumiye Dairesi). Therefore, correspondence between the Ministry and the other ministries or provinces as well as official letters, telegraphs, petitions and reports over various subjects are, from this date, filed into this series.

Judicial affairs

The majority of the documents included in this series deal with public order and security. It also includes correspondence between the Ministry of Interior (Dahiliye Nezareti) and the field services and local administrations about public protection and personal law individual rights.
